Asbestos Lawsuits

Cayuga County Democratic Election Commissioner Dennis Sedor filed two lawsuits against the county this week related to the illegal removal of asbestos in the county Board of Elections building, the latest in a string of legal complaints filed against the county in connection with the scandal.


While Friday?s settlement of Vioxx lawsuits at $4.85 billion seems steep, two years ago, some analysts estimated that it would cost Merck as much as $25 billion.


A fourth class-action lawsuit has been filed against Cayuga County over the illegal removal and disposal of asbestos last year.


The $4.85-billion deal limits the company's liability and allows it to move on. It also vindicates the firm's initial strategy of fighting every case, observers say.
